The Fender Mexico Factory
A Photo Tour
Amplifier Electronics and Final Assembly

As the amplifier cabinets were being made, the electronics were also being made, and assembled.  They both meet together later in the building process to create a complete amp.

But that’s not all, as we will see.

This machine inserts the individual components into the circuit boards.

Years ago I saw a similar machine in the, now defunct, Packard Bell plant. They were making Intel motherboards, and also boards for Zenith Data Systems and NEC with it.

Those “ribbons” coming out of the side are the components stuck by tape.

The boards are then put on carts.

They then go through this machine, called a Wave Soldering machine. It solders all the connections all at once.
But that’s not all.  Each solder joint is individually inspected and if it needs to be redone, it is soldered by hand.
Next, the circuit board is hooked up to a computer and run through a battery of tests.

Test results are then benchmarked off of stored results.  If it falls within the tolerance levels, the board is passed.

The circuit boards are then assembled in their metal enclosures; wires and controls are added to prepare it for final installation in the cabinet.
Next the speakers and the amplifier unit is installed in the cabinets, completing the entire amp.  It’s now ready to go.  Almost.

Notice the two small white rooms at the top left of the photo.  We will discuss them next.

Inside each of those little rooms, you find the quality control person.  The rooms are sound proofed for isolation.

The quality control person CHECKS EACH AND EVERY AMP.  Not spot-checks them.

He runs music of his choice through every amp and listens to setting, every control, and every on-board effect.  If it does not sound exactly right, it gets rejected.  They then figure out what is wrong with it.

When he checks Bass amps, he has to plug a bass into each one to check for rattles.  You can guess he had more than just a bass on the wall, though.

Maybe your thinking that he does not really reject anything. Not true. The day we were there, there were two rejected DeVille’s sitting on the floor.

Now What?  Yes, what you have been waiting for... Guitars.  (Click to continue)
