The
Fender Mexico Factory A
Photo Tour Guitar
Finishing The
bodies and necks are now sealed and finished in their state
of the art paint rooms. The Mexico factory only sprays
Poly. With some equipment changes, they could spray
Nitro, but for now Poly is all they do.
This of course dispels
the rumors that the US guitars are sprayed in Mexico. |
| Here
the bodies are being sealed with a special wood sealer.
It is a wipe on type of gel and sets up very quickly.
They used to use a different type that had to be brushed on.
This is easier and works much better. |

Bodies
are being sprayed in one of their special paint rooms. |
As
well as necks being finished in another. It
was explained to me how the paint rooms work, but it kind
of went over my head.
Something along the
lines of more air is exhausted out of the room than is push
into it. It then keeps the air cleaner for the people
spraying in the room.

As a side
point, ever wonder how they made a SplatterCaster? I know
I did. Do
they put it in on a turntable, spin it and drop paint on it
like those pictures we used to make at the Fair when we were
kids? |
| Yep, that’s exactly
how they do it. They
first paint the body a base color, then mount the body with
the pickguard on one of these turntables, spin it, and drop
paint on it.
They of course had
charts on the wall as to what colors to use, and the basic
quantities.
The bodies and pickguard
have to be marked so the correct sets are matched up later.
The body then has a thick coat of Poly applied so you can’t
feel the paint ridges, and also to protect it.
The pickguard goes
off to have the electronics put on them, and they put them
back together when they finish the guitar.

After the bodies dry,
they are individually checked. |
| The bodies are light
sanded, and smoothed out even further on these huge belt sanders
with super fine grit belts. |
 |
 |
The bodies are
then buffed out on these huge buffers. Each person has
an area of the body they buff. After they are done, the
next person buffs another area of the body. |
| The bodies are now done
and ready for final assembly. |
