Not
too long ago I did some work for a customer. Nothing really
that complex, just some of your run of the mill setup work
on his son's two guitars.
Since it really is just a side
line, I have no problems trading for work.
This
time I was offered a custom pen, designed and handmade
by his 14 year
old son, Nick. I thought to myself, “This
could be interesting, but how good could a pen made by a
14 year old be?”
So
I said “sure, but can you
make it match my Telecaster (aka: The Photocaster)?” The answer was “sure”, and some time later I
was presented with this gorgeous handmade pen, with a translucent “Candy
Apple” red bottom and a Rosewood top, just like my
Telecaster!
I was flabbergasted!
The workmanship was suburb down to the last detail!. It
had a nice, fat body that made it easy
for me to grip with my “Carpel Tunnel” hands.
The pen extended and retraced smoothly with just a simple
turn of the top. And embedded in the Rosewood, were two multi-colored
strips that were actually Fender guitar picks I gave him
to build into the pen!
Also, not only
is the craftsmanship suburb, but the prices are extremely
reasonable. Prices start at about $20.00 and
go up from there. I think the most expensive thing I saw
on the web site was a three piece custom desk set for only
$80.00. Not only that,
but you will be helping a young musician
fuel his new found G.A.S. (Guitar acquisition Syndrome) pains!
So if your looking for a unique gift, or just want a custom
pen to match your guitar, or anything, for that matter, give
Nick a try. I'm sure you will be blow away just as I was!
